Smithfield and York are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2018, but likely not for long. The Packers will be playing at home against the Falcons at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Smithfield fell victim to Grassfield and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 10-0 to the Grizzlies, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Packers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, York waltzed into their contest on Monday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They had just enough and edged out the Lions 7-5. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Sarah Witt was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Bri Petrolia was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Ella Thurman, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
York hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in six consecutive matchups.
York's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-3. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Smithfield, they now have a losing record of 4-5.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Smithfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .363. However, it's not like York struggles in that department as they've averaged .423. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Smithfield suffered a grim 13-1 defeat to York when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Packers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
