The Horizon Hawks waltzed into their matchup on Friday with ten straight wins but they left with 11. They walked away with a 58-47 victory over Legacy. Given Horizon's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked eighth, while Legacy is ranked 120th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Natalie Thornton continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 17 points along with two steals. Madyn Kassatly was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with seven rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Legacy lost, one person who can't be blamed is Olivia Mortensen. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 27 points and 15 rebounds. That was a full 57.4% of Legacy's points, marking the 11th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Meghan Allshouse, who scored nine points along with five assists.
Horizon pushed their record up to 18-2 with that win, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.8 points per game. As for Legacy, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-14 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Horizon will face off against Poudre at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Horizon focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Friday. Legacy will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Fort Collins at 6:30 p.m. on February 13th. Hopefully Legacy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Friday.
