The Sullivan West Bulldogs had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Wednesday. They enjoyed a cozy 39-20 win over Monticello. Given Sullivan West's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 244th, while Monticello is ranked 516th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Despite the defeat, Monticello saw an underclassman step up: Morgan Hutchins dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds. Those 11 points set a new season-high mark for her. Amiah Neails was another key contributor, scoring three points along with four steals.
Sullivan West pushed their record up to 6-2 with that win, which was their third straight at home. As for Monticello, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sullivan West won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Liberty at 5:30 p.m. on January 11th. Liberty comes in still looking for their first win of the season. As for Monticello, they will be playing at home against Cornwall Central at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
