The St. Pius X Sartans will be taking part in a tournament against the Del Norte Knights at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
St. Pius X's tournament run continued when they took on Artesia on Saturday. St. Pius X fell just short of Artesia by a score of 13-12. The Sartans haven't had much luck with the Bulldogs recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Aubri Hooee stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she scored two runs while going 4-for-4. Another player making a difference was Jordan Chavez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Even though they lost, St. Pius X always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .605. The last time their OBP was this high was back in May of 2024.
Meanwhile, Del Norte had to endure an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Highland a 15-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Knights not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since February 29, 2024.
Del Norte saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mya Candelaria, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Del Norte's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for St. Pius X, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.
Del Norte's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: St. Pius X has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Del Norte, though, as they've been averaging 18.2 hits. Given St. Pius X's sizable advantage in that area, Del Norte will need to find a way to close that gap.
St. Pius X took their victory against Del Norte in their previous meeting back in March of 2022 by a conclusive 17-1. Does St. Pius X have another victory up their sleeve, or will Del Norte turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
