Westminster has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Denver South Ravens at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Colorado (Westminster is ranked 119th, while the Ravens are ranked 100th).
Westminster won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Monday. They took a serious blow against Mountain Vista, falling 75-47. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Westminster in their matchups with the Golden Eagles: they've now lost four in a row.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the contest if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Denver South's strategy against the Thunderbirds on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Denver South blew the Thunderbirds out of the water with a 51-5 final score. With Denver South ahead 37-2 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Denver South found their leader in underclassman Ka'Niya (KJ) Anderson, who scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Gehring, who scored six points along with four steals.
Westminster has traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season. As for Denver South, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-8.
Wednesday's matchup will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Brooke Gomez and Nevaeh Millard. Gomez has been dynamite this season: she has averaged 18.9 points, 3.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks. For her part, Millard has averaged 16.5 points, 3.1 steals, and 3.8 rebounds.
Westminster beat the Ravens 70-58 in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Westminster since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
