Southwest and Braddock are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2018, but likely not for long. The Eagles will face off against the Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Southwest is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Homestead with a sharp 19-8 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.
Tatiana Perez made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just one earned (and seven unearned) runs off eight hits. Perez was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sannaya Pardey, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ami Casteleiro, who got on base in two of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Southwest hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Braddock won against Varela on Wednesday with 16 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Bulldogs blew past Coral Park 16-4. The win was familiar territory for the Bulldogs, who have now won five games in a row.
Emely Ramirez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Catherine Fuerte and Emily Cancio did most of the damage at the plate: Fuerte went 3-for-4 with five RBI, three runs, and one triple, while Cancio went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and three runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Diana Mitjans, who earned two runs and four stolen bases.
Braddock's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.3 runs over those games. As for Southwest, their record now sits at 9-5.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Southwest hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .328. However, it's not like Braddock struggles in that department as they've averaged .397. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Southwest came up short against Braddock when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 12-7. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
