After six games on the road, Washington County is heading back home. Having just played yesterday, they will get right back to it and host the Tarboro Vikings at 7:30 p.m. on January 16th. Washington County knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past ten matchups -- so hopefully Tarboro likes a good challenge.
It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Washington County ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They had just enough and edged Great Bridge out 64-62. Given Washington County's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 91st in North Carolina, while Great Bridge is ranked 322nd in Virginia), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Washington County's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ke'Vontae Lucas, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds. Lucas has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last five times he's played. Another player making a difference was Amari Chesson, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Tarboro was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Saturday as they fell 58-53 to SouthWest Edgecombe. Tarboro has struggled against SouthWest Edgecombe recently, as their matchup on Saturday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Washington County's win bumped their record up to 10-0. As for Tarboro, they bumped their record down to 1-8 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight at home.
Everything came up roses for Washington County against Tarboro in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 as the squad secured a 93-55 win. With Washington County ahead 54-27 at the half, the match was all but over already.
