With a playoff game on the line, the Mount Vernon Tigers rose to the challenge on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Gladewater 49-7 on the road. The result was nothing new for Mount Vernon, who have now won four games by 25 points or more so far this season.
Dawson Witherspoon continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 237 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 7.9 yards per carry. Witherspoon was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 56 yards. Mount Vernon also got help from Mitchell Nuziard who showed off his sure hands for 111 receiving yards.
Despite the loss, Gladewater still got an impressive performance from Carsin Cooper, who rushed for 219 yards and a touchdown while picking up 9.1 yards per carry. Cooper hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for three straight games.
Mount Vernon's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 48.8 points per game. As for Gladewater, their loss dropped their record down to 3-8.
Mount Vernon will be playing in front of their home fans against Malakoff at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Malakoff will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line. Gladewater does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
