Lyons and Dawson School are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Lions will square off against the Mustangs at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Lyons is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Lyons blew Bishop Machebeuf out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Thursday Bishop Machebeuf got their revenge. The Lions fell just short of the Buffaloes by a score of 4-2. The Lions have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Lyons saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jake LaCrosse, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last matchup, Dawson School made sure to put some runs up on the board against Clear Creek on Thursday. The Mustangs were the clear victors by a 13-4 margin over the Golddiggers. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won six contests by nine runs or more so far this season.
Dawson Kusel made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Julian Sutton was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Dawson School is undefeated when Sutton posts two or more runs, but 6-8 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Shelton Johnson, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Dawson School kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 10.8.
Dawson School is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.9 runs over those games. As for Lyons, their loss dropped their record down to 8-10.
Lyons came out on top in a nail-biter against Dawson School in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
