The Animas Panthers are on the road again on Tuesday and plays the Magdalena Steers at 4:30 p.m. on February 13th. Hopefully Animas focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Saturday.
Last Saturday, Animas came up short against Cliff and fell 39-30. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Animas in their matchups with Cliff: they've now lost four in a row.
Animas' defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Journey Sheehan, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds, and Sofia Martinez who scored eight points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Magdalena had already won nine in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 18 points), and they went ahead and made it ten on Thursday. They enjoyed a cozy 47-30 victory over Quemado.
Jorianne Mirabal was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Elia Cleveland, who scored six points along with three steals.
Animas has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 11-10 record this season. As for Magdalena, their win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-4.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Animas have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 37 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Magdalena struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Animas couldn't quite finish off Magdalena in their previous matchup two weeks ago and fell 41-39. Can Animas avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
