The West Texas Comanches will take on the New Deal Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: West Texas has struggled recently with three defeats in a row, while New Deal will arrive with six straight victories.
Last Friday, West Texas had to suffer through a rough 55-7 loss at the hands of Stratford. While losing is never fun, West Texas can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 950th, while Stratford is ranked 225th).
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday New Deal sidestepped Post for a 29-26 victory.
New Deal got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Slade Martin out in front who rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.2 yards per carry. Martin is on a roll when it comes to solo tackles, as he's now made six or more in the last six games he's played. Nathan Brown also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to New Deal's defense and their three sacks. Konner Vasquez was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.
Stratford's victory bumped their season record to 10-0 while West Texas' defeat dropped theirs to 4-6.
West Texas took a serious blow against New Deal in their previous meeting back in December of 2018, falling 57-6. Thankfully for West Texas, Jett Whitfield (who threw for 203 yards and five touchdowns on only 13 passes, and also rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on only 11 carries) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
