Basketball Recap: Ellwood City Sets Scoring Season-High Against Freedom Area

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Ellwood City). They took their match on Friday with ease, bagging a 78-48 victory over the Freedom Area Bulldogs. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 61-36 back in December of 2024.

Leading Ellwood City to victory were Aaron Lake and Kaleb Servick. Lake dropped a double-double on 22 points and 18 boards, while Servick went 9 of 18 on his way to 19 points in addition to seven assists and six steals. The dominant performance gave Servick a new career-high in points. Maykel Cuevas also deserves some recognition as he posted his first blocks of the season.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Ellwood City was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Freedom Area only posted 11 assists.

Despite the loss, Freedom Area saw an underclassman step up: freshman Justin Shegog went 8 for 15 en route to 24 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Xavier Robbins, who posted six points and five rebounds.

Ellwood City pushed their record up to 9-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.3 points per game. As for Freedom Area, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-13.

Ellwood City has already played their next game, an 84-59 victory against Riverside on the 21st. As for Freedom Area, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 87-18 defeat against Aliquippa on the 24th.
