Sandia is 9-1 against Eldorado since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Matadors will look to defend their home field against the Golden Eagles at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Sandia's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. Everything went their way against Capital as they made off with a 20-0 victory. The match marked the Matadors' most dominant win of the season.
Liliana Villanueva made a splash while hitting and pitching. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Villanueva was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Steph Brooks, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, seven RBI, and three runs. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two). Iliana Lujan was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Sandia always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .656. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Capital only posted an OBP of .000.
Meanwhile, Eldorado had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over the Monarchs.
Like Sandia, Eldorado also got a great game from a two-way player: Zoe Green. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Green was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Shannon Harrison was incredible, firing off four doubles, three runs, and four RBI while going 4-for-4. Another player making a difference was Mya Zamora, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Sandia has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.1 runs over those games. As for Eldorado, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-10.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sandia has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .506. However, it's not like Eldorado struggles in that department as they've averaged .490. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Sandia's way against Eldorado when the teams last played last Saturday, as Sandia made off with a 9-3 victory. Will the Matadors repeat their success, or do the Golden Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
