Lukus Schmitt made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddox Moon, who went 1-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Zack Berry, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs.
Meanwhile, Westview was able to grind out a solid win over Churubusco on Thursday, taking the game 4-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Warriors.
Jack Massey spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on one hit and racked up nine Ks. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Westview is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-8 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Maverick Deveau was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three runs. That home run was his first of the season.
Columbia City's victory bumped their record up to 15-7. As for Westview, their win bumped their record up to 8-10.
Columbia City's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's match. The Eagles have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Westview, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Columbia City continue to outrun the ball?
