The Millersport Lakers will square off against the Berne Union Rockets at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Millersport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.6 runs per game this season.
Millersport couldn't beat Grove City Christian on Monday even though they stacked four runs on them in the fifth inning. The Lakers fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 8-7.
Kendyl Bonkowski put in work while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up five earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Emma Raver was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Berne Union fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Fisher Catholic on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 12-8 to the Irish. The Rockets have struggled against the Irish recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.
Berne Union saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Josilyn Hedges, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Cloe Hatzer was another, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Millersport's defeat dropped their record down to 13-6. As for Berne Union, their loss dropped their record down to 10-8.
Berne Union's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Millersport has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Berne Union, though, as they've been averaging 8.9 hits. Given Millersport's sizable advantage in that area, the Rockets will need to find a way to close that gap.
Millersport took their win against Berne Union in their previous matchup back in April by a conclusive 16-5 score. Will the Lakers repeat their success, or do the Rockets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
