Great Bend scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Dodge City, 24-7. At the time, the Demons was ranked 24th in the state, while the Panthers was 49th.
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Great Bend, who took down 24th ranked Dodge City, 24-7.
Dave Foster's team's dynamic duo of Newton Kelan and Duckett Dakota proved tough for Bo Black's team to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Kelan threw for 241 yards and one touchdown and Dakota had 168 yards receiving. Murphy Taylor helped Dodge City's passing attack out by catching three balls for 35 yards.
Britton Abbott was the most productive running back in Western Athletic this week. He ran for 101 yards on 23 carries as Liberal lost to the Panthers. Teammate Rex Heronemus added to the ground attack by rushing for 23 yards.
Liberal's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Redskins feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Abbott has thrown for 1416 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, while Trenton Hammond has 36 catches for 638 yards. Abbott also leads the league in rushing with 394 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Hays takes on Dodge City. As it stands, the Indians are in first, while the Demons are in fourth.
Kelan and Dakota provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Great Bend. The longest such play in Western Athletic this season, the connection resulted in 76 yards.
