Hammond extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 12 on Wednesday, dropping them down to 0-4. They came up short against the River Hill Hawks, falling 17-4. On the bright side, the four- run performance marked the Golden Bears' highest-scoring matchup to date.
Makayla Maloney spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and 16 unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, Hammond saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was AJ Burger, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double. Another was Madison Osborn, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one stolen base.
As for River Hill, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 12.5 runs this season.
On River Hill's side, Annie Levine made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over four innings pitched. Levine was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, River Hill let Grace Gonsouland and Erica Massie run wild. Gonsouland went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Massie went 4-for-5 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. Rebekah Santos was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI.
