Basketball Recap: Austin Piles Up the Points Against Akins

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Westlake, Austin was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Akins Eagles 80-27. The Maroons have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten contests by 21 points or more this season.

Austin's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jillian Shirk, who went 8 for 15 on her way to 22 points and five steals. Shirk is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 12 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Lillian Walker, who went 5 of 8 en route to 11 points in addition to six assists and four steals.

Austin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in eight consecutive matches.

Austin is on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 17 games, which provided a nice bump to their 20-11 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.6 points per game. As for Akins, their loss was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-15.

Coincidentally, Austin and Akins will both be playing Bowie the next time they take the court. Akins will host Bowie at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Austin will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on January 31st.
