The Nichols Vikings are taking a road trip to square off against the Mount St. Mary Academy Thunder at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Nichols is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Nichols took a six-run loss the last time they faced off against Mount Mercy Academy, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Vikings came out on top in a nail-biter against the Magic on Wednesday, sneaking past 4-2. Those four runs were actually the fewest the Vikings have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Reyes Rodriguez spent all ten innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up eight Ks.
On the hitting side, Annabelle Berke was incredible, going 1-for-4 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Riley Keller also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Mount St. Mary Academy fell victim to St. Mary's and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 9-0 to the Lancers.
Mount St. Mary Academy saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Elizabeth Frisbie, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
Nichols pushed their record up to 4-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Mount St. Mary Academy, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 3-5.
Nichols' speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's matchup. The Vikings have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Mount St. Mary Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Nichols continue to outrun the ball?
Nichols skirted past Mount St. Mary Academy 4-3 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
