5A Super 6 recap September 24, 2013
Columbine extended the longest winning streak in 5A Super 6 this week by beating Horizon, 42-14. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Rebels.
Columbine took down the Hawks 42-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Bernard McDondle ran for 265 yards during the win.
McDondle was the best running back in the league this week. Teammate Larry Munson added to the ground attack by rushing for 59 yards.
Patrick Stephens was the best receiver in the league this week as Mullen lost to Grandview. Stephens tallied 7 receptions for 130 yards. Michael Sienkiewicz helped Mullen's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 44 yards.
Kyle Winkler put up the best numbers in passing as Chatfield topped Arvada West. He finished with 20 completions for 201 yards and 4 touchdowns. Winkler's favorite target this week was Jah'rel Olson, who caught 5 passes for 80 yards.
McDondle was a beast in the backfield as Andy Lowry's team defeated Horizon.
He went 20-25 with 0 interception.
Casey Nichols provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Lakewood fell to Fairview. He completed 17 passes for 289 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 28 yards. Nichols' favorite target this week was Tevin Lucas, who caught 4 passes for 104 yards.
The leading receiver in the league this season is Ethan Brunhofer. The Arapahoe star has 23 catches for 345 yards.
The marquee game in 5A Super 6 this week will be the clash between Arapahoe and the Rebels. The Warriors enters the game ranked 25th in the state, while Columbine ranks fifth.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when Arapahoe's Brunhofer goes up against the Rebels' Emery Taylor.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Mike Campbell's team takes on Columbine. The Warriors have allowed 53 points this season, while the Rebels have given up 47. Arapahoe allowed 6 points last week as it bested Mountain Vista.
The Warriors and the Golden Eagles played the most contested game in the league this week, with the Warriors eventually emerging with a 7-6 victory. Gabe Peterson threw for 79 yards and ran for 47 yards in the win.
