Lake Weir and Dunnellon are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2017, but not for long. The Lake Weir Hurricanes will be playing at home against the Dunnellon Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Lake Weir is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
Lake Weir suffered their biggest defeat since November 30, 2023 on Thursday. They were beaten by Umatilla 67-20. While losing is never fun, Lake Weir can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 585th, while Umatilla is ranked 159th).
Meanwhile, Dunnellon unfortunately witnessed the end of their 13-game winning streak on Monday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 42-41 to Bradford. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Dunnellon has scored all season.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Tatiana Matthews, who scored 15 points along with three steals and three blocks. Matthews is absolutely dominating the point category: she's posted at least 15 every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Shamyra Reid, who scored six points along with 16 rebounds.
Dunnellon struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Lake Weir bumped their record down to 0-12 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight at home. As for Dunnellon, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-3.
Lake Weir came up short against Dunnellon when the teams last played back in December of 2022, falling 74-67. Thankfully for Lake Weir, Kmari Williams (who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and six assists) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
