The Baker Hornets are taking a road trip to challenge the Mary G. Montgomery Vikings at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.
Baker took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over Robertsdale. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won ten contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Katlyn Cone was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI.
In other batting news, Kristina Lapeyrouse and Lauren Mordecai did most of the damage at the plate: Lapeyrouse scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Mordecai scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Savannah Diehl was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Baker was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Robertsdale only posted a batting average of .125.
Meanwhile, Mary G. Montgomery won against Davidson on Wednesday with 16 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. The Vikings didn't even let the Warriors on the board, marking the Vikings' second-straight 16-0 shutout. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Vikings.
Mary G. Montgomery let Gracie Coleman and Ava Gradick run wild. Coleman scored two runs while going 2-for-4, while Gradick scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. The dominant performance also gave Coleman a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Bailey Campbell, who scored a run while going 3-for-3.
Baker's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-8. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for Mary G. Montgomery, their record is now 7-11.
Baker skirted past Mary G. Montgomery 15-13 in their previous meeting two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
