La Joya and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. La Joya will be playing in front of their home fans against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Having struggled with four losses in a row, La Joya turned things around against Economedes on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Jaguars by a score of 8-4. That looming 8-4 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Coyotes yet this season.
Alexia Guajardo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Jasmin Sanchez was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bianca Guajardo, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo was able to grind out a solid victory over Edinburg North on Tuesday, taking the game 8-4. The win continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won six in a row.
Like La Joya, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo also got a great game from a two-way player: Arieanna Hernandez. She pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Hernandez was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arianna Lugo, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. She has been hot, having posted three or more hits the last five times she's played. Kaylie Lopez was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
La Joya's victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 3-9. As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, they pushed their record up to 16-1 with the win, which was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season.
La Joya skirted past Pharr-San Juan-Alamo 5-4 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Does La Joya have another victory up their sleeve, or will Pharr-San Juan-Alamo turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
