Baseball Recap: Silex Snags Sixth Win in Last Eight Games

Silex came out on top against Wellsville-Middletown on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive ten-run third inning. The Owls never let the Tigers get on the board and left with a 15-0 win. Considering the Owls have won six matchups by more than eight runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Chase Vehige and Joe Dameron were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Vehige struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Dameron tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Vehige got on base in two of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Dameron got on base in both of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Dameron has become a key player for Silex: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 4-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, Jack Johnson was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Silex's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-5 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Beagle, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Silex always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .676. The last time their OBP was this high was was before the start of last season.

Silex has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Wellsville-Middletown, they dropped their record down to 1-13 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.

Coming up, Silex will venture away from home to take on Paris at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Owls are facing the Coyotes at the right time seeing as the Coyotes are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Wellsville-Middletown, they will be playing at home against Missouri Military Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
