It was a good run, but the Pikesville Panthers unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Saturday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 55-54 to St. Mary. Pikesville found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and rack up ten fewer assists than your opponent.
Despite the defeat, Pikesville saw an underclassman step up: Mariah Jones-Bey scored 24 points along with five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Jones-Bey has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Darielle Weems, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and three steals.
St. Mary's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alexandra Vandiver, who shot 6-for-8 from deep and dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Vandiver hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. Bailey Harris was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with four blocks and two steals.
Pikesville's defeat dropped their record down to 13-3. As for St. Mary's, they have been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pikesville will challenge Overlea at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. St. Mary's will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 5:30 p.m. on January 31st. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is out to stop a five-game streak of losses at home.
