Black River and Wellington are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Dukes at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Wellington will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Black River extended their winning streak to four on Wednesday. The Pirates came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 8-7 W against Loudonville. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Pirates have posted since April 16th.
Abbey Kiser was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off nine hits. Kiser was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Remi Dieter was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Olivia Bailey, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Wellington never got on the board in their matchup on Monday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against East Canton on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-9 victory over the Hornets.
Like Black River, Wellington also got a great game from a two-way player: Mallory Pickering. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off five hits. Pickering was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Caedyn Wacker, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Courtney Krosse was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Black River's win bumped their record up to 14-7. As for Wellington, the victory got them back to even at 9-9.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Black River hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .363. However, it's not like Wellington struggles in that department as they've averaged .316. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Black River took their win against Wellington in their previous matchup back in April by a conclusive 10-4 score. Will the Pirates repeat their success, or do the Dukes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
