Akron and Wray are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. The Rams will welcome the Eagles at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Akron gave up the first runs on Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with an 11-6 victory over Merino.
Jax Kusel and Caleb Poss made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Kusel tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Poss pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Kusel went 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Poss scored a run while going 2-for-3. That triple was Kusel's first of the season.
In other batting news, Jakzon Livesay was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that he hit this season. Another player making a difference was Mason Porteus, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.
Akron always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
13 must be Wray's lucky number: they beat Holyoke with that score not once but twice on Saturday. The Eagles didn't even let the Dragons on the board, marking the Eagles' second-straight 13-0 shutout. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.
Gabe Kechter was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Kechter was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Broderick Kite, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1. Brodie Riggleman was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-1.
Akron's win bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Wray, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Akron has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Wray struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Akron skirted past Wray 3-1 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Will the Rams repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
