Sumner hasn't had much luck against Rogers recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. Sumner will be playing at home against Rogers at 4:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Sumner comes in on three and Rogers on five.
Sumner proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 12) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-7 win over Yelm.
The team relied heavily on Olivia Alastra, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Abby Dean was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
Alastra wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Sumner kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Rogers posted their closest victory since May 8, 2024 on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Emerald Ridge 2-1.
Sierra Murray spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Rogers saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Payton Walling, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Rogers pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Sumner, their win bumped their record up to 3-0.
Sumner's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. Sumner has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Rogers, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Sumner continue to outrun the ball?
