Basketball Recap: McAllen Takes a Loss

After flying high against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial last Tuesday, McAllen came back down to earth. The McAllen Bulldogs took a 52-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North Raiders. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 640th, while the Raiders are ranked 288th).

Despite the defeat, McAllen saw an underclassman step up: freshman Olivia Gonzalez went 6 of 12 on her way to 16 points and six rebounds. That's the most points Gonzalez has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Emily Ham, who posted nine points and five assists.

Even though they lost, McAllen smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in three consecutive contests.

McAllen has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 18-16 record this season. As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North, they are on a roll lately: they've won 17 of their last 22 games, which provided a nice bump to their 24-10 record this season.

McAllen will be playing in front of their home fans against McAllen Memorial at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North, they will challenge Sharyland at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
