Another high-profile tournament has left its imprint on MaxPreps Xcellent Top 25 National High School Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard, as there is a new No. 1 along with nine new teams enter the rankings.
And six of those newly ranked teams have a combined record of 77-0. All accounted for, a dozen unbeatens are ranked this week. And that includes a new number one, Walton (Marietta, Ga.).
Walton, which won the Berkeley Prep Invitational last weekend in Tampa, jumps from No. 3 past unbeaten Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.) to No. 1. Walton is 24-0, averaging 14.4 kills per set during a 31-match winning streak and has won three major tournaments this season.
Former No. 1 Reagan (San Antonio) has won 12 straight. The Rattlers have seven players averaging two or more digs per set, three players averaging three assists or better per set and four players averaging two or more kills per set. But despite that success and their 31-1 record, the Rattlers dropped to No. 3.
Walton is led by 6-4 junior
Gabby Gonzales, who is averaging 5.5 kills per set. As a team, the Raiders are hitting almost 53 percent. They have defeated teams from five different states.
Dorman won 10 matches last weekend to win its own invitational tournament and has 43-straight wins over two seasons.
Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), whose only loss is to Walton, won the prestigious 64-team Durango Tournament in Las Vegas for the second time in three years. The Rockets handed Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Marin Catholic (Kentfield, Calif.) their first losses of the season.
Redondo Union and Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) lost a match, but remained highly ranked as they finished second and third, respectively, behind Assumption in Las Vegas.
Oak Ridge (Conroe, Texas) has won 10 straight and four in a row since returning to play after a two-week interruption from Hurricane Harvey.
Led by
Courtney and
Kola Bad Bear, Billings Senior (Billings, Mont.) made its debut in the Top 25. The Broncs have won 38-of-39 sets and are unbeaten in 16 matches. Earlier this season, Billings Senior ended Missoula Sentinel's 28-match win streak.
Also new to the Top 25 this week are Deer Creek (Edmond, Okla.), Lakeville North (Minn.), Buford (Ga.), The Woodlands (Texas), Kuemper Catholic (Carroll, Iowa), Center Grove (Ind.) and a pair of unbeaten Colorado teams, Eaton and Lewis-Palmer (Monument).
This week's featured match pits a pair of Top 10 teams from California – Redondo Union and Mater Dei on Tuesday. Mater Dei draws Santa Margarita, another Top 25 team, on Thursday.
