I Section I recap October 1, 2013
Highland was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from fourth to second in I Section I. The Hawks defeated Campo Verde 27-24 earlier in the week.
Highland and the Coyotes played the most contested game in the league this week, with Highland eventually emerging with a 27-24 victory. Blake Young threw for 35 yards in the win.
Zach Werlinger provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Basha fell to Westview. He completed 27 passes for 399 yards and also ran for 8 yards. Werlinger's key target this week was Jared Schmidt, who caught 6 passes for 125 yards.
Bryce Perkins threw for 147 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Grant Thompson was a key player and the best on defense this week as Pete Wahlheim's team defeated Campo Verde. The 6-foot-3 senior.
Dylon Gillette was the best running back in the league this week. In 24 carries, he ran for 164 yards as Gilbert lost to the Knights. Bailey Moore also contributed to the rushing game with 82 yards on the ground.
Basha's Werlinger and Doc O'Connor have formed a dream team this season, leading I Section I in both passing and receiving yards. Werlinger has thrown for 1,643 yards this season, while O'Connor, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 35 catches for 509 yards. Austin Nightingale from Perry leads the league in rushing with 369 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Hamilton and Chandler. The Huskies enters the contest ranked third in the state, while the Wolves ranks fourth.
Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Chandler takes on Hamilton. Shawn Aguano's team's offense has recorded 184 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while Steve Belles' team has permitted only 93 on the year.
The Wolves took down Cesar Chavez 41-21 last week, the largest margin of any game. Perkins ran for 14 yards during the win.
