2A-1 Region II District 6 recap November 5, 2013
Pottsboro added to the longest winning streak in 2A-1 Region II District 6 this week by beating Sunnyvale, 10-7. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Cardinals.
Farmersville took down Commerce 42-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
ALEX PHILLIPS provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Van Alstyne bested Howe. He completed 9 passes for 91 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 70 yards. PHILLIPS's favorite target this week was SHAWN WHEELER, who caught 5 passes for 64 yards.
WHEELER was the best receiver in the league this week as the Panthers topped the Bulldogs. WHEELER tallied 5 receptions for 64 yards. TREY BURDEN helped Van Alstyne's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 12 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Sunnyvale's Ryan Cottingame and Josh Quinn have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-4 quarterback Cottingame has thrown for 2,679 yards this season, while Quinn has 60 catches for 988 yards. PHILLIPS from Van Alstyne leads the league in rushing with 1,183 yards.
John Settle's team's Quinn is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 12 receiving yards against Howe to hit that benchmark. He has recorded 60 catches for 988 yards this year.
A big matchup in 2A-1 Region II District 6 this week will be when Mikeal Miller's team takes on the Farmers. At the moment, the Panthers are in fourth, while Farmersville is in third.
Pottsboro and Sunnyvale played the closest game in the league this week, with Pottsboro eventually emerging with a 10-7 victory. Thaddeus Flinn ran for 132 yards in the win.
