Vanguard is 8-2 against Lake Weir since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Knights will face off against the Hurricanes at 6:30 p.m. Vanguard is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Vanguard was able to grind out a solid win over Matanzas, taking the game 6-1. The Knights haven't had any issues with the Pirates recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Bobby Blanco made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. Blanco was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jacob ?Jake? Wells, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. He also put up a triple, which was his first of the season. Clayton ?CT? Antonucci was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Vanguard kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Matanzas only managed six hits.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lake Weir). They blew past Crescent City 31-1 on Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Hurricanes needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Like Vanguard, Lake Weir also got a great game from a two-way player: Chapter Jones. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Jones has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all six of his plate appearances with five RBI and three runs. Lake Weir is undefeated when Jones posts two or more runs, but 5-14 otherwise.
In other batting news, Skyler Courtney was incredible, going 2-for-5 with four runs, five RBI, and one double. He has become a key player for Lake Weir: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Kason Lucky, who scored four runs while going 2-for-2.
Vanguard pushed their record up to 18-4 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Lake Weir, their record is now 10-14.
Vanguard beat Lake Weir 7-4 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Will the Knights repeat their success, or do the Hurricanes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
