The Newport Buffaloes will challenge the Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy WolfPack at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Newport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Newport and Line Mountain meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Wednesday. Newport's pitcher stepped up to hand Line Mountain a 10-0 shutout. The victory continues a trend for the Buffaloes in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won five in a row.
Landon Zaring was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Zaring was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those RBI marked the first that he brought in this season.
In other batting news, Jameson Cummins was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Zachary Bates was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy was a bit more limited in their contest on Thursday. They came up short against Juniata, falling 13-2. The WolfPack have struggled against the Indians recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.
Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Braeden Miller, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Newport's win bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy, they now have a losing record of 1-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Newport has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Newport couldn't quite finish off Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 and fell 3-1. Will Newport have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
