Cheney Tech is 0-4 against Somers since May of 2021 but things could change on Saturday. The Chargers will venture away from home to square off against the Spartans at 1:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
On Wednesday, Cheney Tech got the win against Academy of Science and Innovation by a conclusive 11-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Chargers.
Jovan Garcia made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Garcia was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Morgan Salkeld, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that he hit this season. Another player making a difference was Malik Mendez, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-2.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Somers). They blew past Bolton 10-4 on Wednesday. That's two games straight that the Spartans have won by exactly six runs.
Like Cheney Tech, Somers also got a great game from a two-way player: Brandon Damboragian. He struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Damboragian was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing four bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Will Accorsi and Andrew Czerwinski did most of the damage at the plate: Accorsi scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances, while Czerwinski scored two runs and stole a base while going 4-for-5. With that strong performance, Accorsi is now averaging an impressive 1.3 stolen bases per game. Jack Olearcek was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Somers always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bolton only posted an OBP of .400.
The win got Somers back to even at 2-2. As for Cheney Tech, their record now sits at 3-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Cheney Tech has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Somers struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Cheney Tech suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Somers when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Chargers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
