The Willcox Cowboys's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fourth straight loss. They ended up on the wrong side of a tough 78-54 walloping at the hands of Empire. Willcox found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and post 11 fewer assists than your opponent.
Willcox's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Alan Solis, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds and two steals, and Lane Whetten who dropped a double-double on ten points and 13 rebounds. Whetten hasn't dropped below ten rebounds for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Caden Hooper, who scored six points along with seven rebounds.
Deshawn Washington continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Empire, scoring 29 points along with seven steals and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jack Wernimont, who scored 12 points.
Willcox has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-18 record this season. As for Empire, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 17-10.
Willcox and Santa Rita will face off at 7:00 p.m. on February 6th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Willcox is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 50.7 points per game this season. Empire does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
