The Lakewood Lancers came tearing into Monday's contest with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Millikan by a score of 81-68. Given Lakewood's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 104th, while Millikan is ranked 712th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Lakewood's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Keaton Lewis led the charge by scoring 16 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Lewis has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Anthony Williams, who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
When it comes to explaining why Millikan lost, one person who can't be blamed is Dylan Williams. Despite the final result, he shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and dropped a double-double on 26 points and ten rebounds. Williams is trending in the right direction, as he's improved his point production for three games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeremiah Hunt, who scored 16 points along with two steals.
Lakewood has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. As for Millikan, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-16.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lakewood will square off against Woodrow Wilson at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Woodrow Wilson knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matchups -- so hopefully Lakewood likes a good challenge. As for Millikan, they will head out on the road to face off against Cabrillo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
