Kenneth Smeltzer was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Wesley Hartsock was excellent, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. CJ Fidler was another key player, earning two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Edgerton waltzed into their game on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Cadets. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bulldogs have posted since April 26th.
Like Montpelier, Edgerton also got a great game from a two-way player: Maddox Baker. On the mound, he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Baker has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one triple.
Baker wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kellen Sanchez, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
Montpelier's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Edgerton, their win bumped their record up to 16-10.
Everything went Montpelier's way against Edgerton in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Montpelier made off with a 9-2 victory. Do the Locomotives have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Bulldogs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
