Corona del Sol and Mountain Ridge are an even 4-4 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Corona del Sol Aztecs will be playing at home against the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Corona del Sol took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand O'Connor a 3-0 shutout. That three run margin sets a new team best for the Aztecs this season.
The result came thanks to Caitlyn Ackerley's shutout, as she gave up just four hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jami Sheehan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Mountain Ridge faced West Point in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. Mountain Ridge blew past West Point 14-2. The Mountain Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by seven runs or more this season.
Gianna Torres was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). That's the first time she hasn't allowed a single hit since back in February of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Ainsley Cottrell was incredible, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2. Italia Carpio was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Mountain Ridge kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive contests.
Mountain Ridge is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. Corona del Sol's win ended a four-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 4-2.
Corona del Sol took their victory against Mountain Ridge in their previous matchup back in March of 2022 by a conclusive 11-1. Will Corona del Sol repeat their success, or does Mountain Ridge have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
