South Vermillion is 8-1 against Greencastle since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Wildcats will host the Tiger Cubs at 5:30 p.m. South Vermillion is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
South Vermillion barely beat Fountain Central the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Wildcats' pitcher stepped up to hand the Mustangs a 10-0 shutout on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Wildcats.
Shaylee Wallace made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out eight over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rosie Travioli, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Layla Mackey was another key player, scoring four runs while going 2-for-3.
South Vermillion hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are 2-1 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Greencastle was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They lost 12-2 to West Vigo.
Greencastle saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brinley Mullis, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Those RBI marked the first that Mullis brought in this season.
Greencastle's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for South Vermillion, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.
Greencastle's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: South Vermillion has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Greencastle, though, as they've been averaging 9.2 hits. Given South Vermillion's sizable advantage in that area, the Tiger Cubs will need to find a way to close that gap.
