Baseball Recap: Mansfield Summit Comes Up Short

Mansfield Summit had lost three straight at home, but on Saturday they dropped down to 13-13 to make it four. They fell 8-4 to the Bowie Volunteers. If the Jaguars were looking for revenge after losing 3-2 to the Volunteers when the teams met back in February of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Richard Graves was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. He is becoming a predictor of Mansfield Summit's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-3 (and 7-10 when he doesn't).

As for Bowie, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-16 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.

On Bowie's side, Jaxon Turner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). Those nine strikeouts gave Turner a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and one triple. He has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last seven times he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zion Sturghill, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Raul Sanchez III, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mansfield Summit will take on Molina at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Bowie, they will head out to square off against Lamar at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
