The West Warwick Wizards (West Warwick, RI) basketball nipped the host Westerly Bulldogs (Westerly, RI), 68-65 in Thursday's league test.
The Wizards (7-2) will now prepare for their test against Portsmouth (Portsmouth, RI). The Patriots go into the Division II - South test with a 5-2 record. In their last test, Portsmouth got by Mt. Hope (Bristol, RI), 58-46, in a league test.
The Bulldogs now own a 4-4 record. They take the field next when they host Rogers for a Division II - South test on Tuesday, January 13. Westerly will clash with a Vikings squad coming off a 55-48 league win over East Greenwich (East Greenwich, RI). The Vikings record now stands at 7-1.
Quarter 2
Despite holding leading scorer, Joe Sciro, scoreless in the first half, West Warwick trailed the Bulldogs 36-26 at halftime. The Bulldogs were led by the shooting of Jon Wish (15 of his 17 points in the first half)and Marc Gabrielle (9 points).
Quarter 4
After the Wizards tied the game at 43-43 with 8:40 to play, the lead changed hands several times. With 1:36 to play, junior forward Charles Parent pulled down an offensive rebound, made a putback, and completed an "old fashion" three point play at the foul line to five the Wizards a 64-60 lead. After Westerly's Ian Brownhill cut the Wizards lead to 64-63 with 1:03 to play, Reuben Paygai (2/2) and Ryan Lawton (1/2) made three of four foul shots to seal the road win for the Wizards. The Wizards, who moved their record to 7-2 overall, improved to 2-2 in II-South.
