There was much controversy in the game with Winfield. As usual, the biggest game of the year between unbeatens and top ranked teams only garnered two referees. They missed many fouls and allowed the game to get out of hand physically. All three goals scored by Winfield were surrounded circumstances. One goal, showed by local TV station WSAZ, showed that Winfield was clearly offsides. Another goal, the ball went out the endline and was allowed to play on which resulted in a cross pass to a Winfield player who scored. The last goal was scored over the heads of two injured players laying on the ground inside the goalie box.
