A&M Consolidated built an early 16-0 lead and fought off the Cavaliers' various comeback attempts to hold on for the victory. Lake Travis, ranked No. 2 in Texas and
No. 12 nationally, received a scare last week from Round Rock Westwood (Austin), but
was able to launch a late comeback. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, they couldn't do the same this week.
A&M Consolidated scored on its second possession, a 7-yard run by
Derrick Dick. Trouble on the snap didn't allow the Tigers to attempt the extra point, but they took a 6-0 lead.
After recovering a fumble on an attempted punt return, A&M Consolidated added to its lead with a Dillon Moore 24-yard field goal to make it 9-0.
A 38-yard touchdown pass from
Jaylan Cheshire to
Josch Motley gave the Tigers a 16-0 lead with 10:31 left in the half.
Lake Travis quarterback Baker Mayfield attempted to lead his team back into the game with a touchdown pass, but A&M Consolidated answered with a
Xavier Jones 25-yard touchdown to make it 23-7 with 3:49 left in the half.
Lake Travis cut into the lead again, and gained some momentum heading into halftime, on a 4-yard touchdown run by Shaun Nixon to make it 23-14.
Mayfield opened the second half with another touchdown pass to cut the Tigers lead to 23-21.
But once again A&M Consolidated responded, capitalizing on another fumbled punt return and scoring on a 29-yard pass, increasing its lead to 30-21.
With 6:30 left in the fourth quarter, Lake Travis went 80 yards on two plays — a 53-yard run by Mayfield and a 27-yard touchdown run by Nixon — to once more cut the lead to two, 30-28.
However the Cavaliers were unable to get one more score, and the game ended in a major upset. Both teams are now 3-1.
