7. Ron Powlus, Berwick (Berwick, Pa.)One of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the country in the early 1990s, Powlus was named National Player of the Year by USA Today, Parade and Gatorade. When Powlus arrived at Notre Dame, Beano Cook of ESPN predicted Powlus would win multiple Heisman Trophies. Instead, Powlus was hobbled by injuries (although he did set 20 school records). Powlus never contended for the Heisman and he played only one season in the NFL before becoming an assistant coach at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis.
6. Ken Hall, Sugar Land (Texas)Perhaps
the greatest high school player ever if you look only at his prep
stats, Hall never quite reached his potential at the college and pro
level. Hall set numerous national records in 1953, including career
rushing yards (11,232 yards) and career points (899). His career rushing
is still the national record while his point total now ranks fifth. He
played at Texas A&M for Paul "Bear" Bryant, but was passed over for
the halfback position by John David Crow, who would go on to win the
Heisman in 1957.
