Video: Top 25 national softball rankings See who climbed back into the top spot.
They're back. The Norco (Calif.) softball team returned to the top of the MaxPreps Top 25 national softball rankings after former No. 1, Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton, Fla.), lost on its final day of the 2019 season.
Norco began the season ranked No.1 and held that spot for a dozen weeks before a 4-3, eight-inning loss saw Lakewood Ranch assume the top spot. It turns out, that was the Cougars' lone setback for 2019 and the California team closed out its season two weeks ago defending the CIF Southern Section D1 title, a crown they've won five times in the past decade.
With two rankings remaining in the 2019 season, Norco — also ranked No. 1 in MaxPreps Computer Rankings — looks headed toward a National Title. After all, Southern California softball is ranked the hottest spot for college recruiters.
Norco is impressive, but it's the only team in the top five that has lost a game. The question: How long will Norco remain No. 1 with so many undefeated teams closing in?
Teams ranked Nos. 2-5 have yet to lose and No. 10 Keystone (La Grange, Ohio) is 28-0 with a 62-game win streak.
Foothill (Pleasanton, Calif.), ranked second, defeated Heritage (Brentwood, Calif.) to win the North Coast Section D1 title and conclude its season 28-0.
Winter Springs (Fla.), ranked No. 3, can lay a loud claim as it shut out Lakewood Ranch. Male (Louisville, Ky.) is seeking to become only the second Kentucky softball team to go unbeaten and North Oshkosh (Oshkosh, Wisc.) is 26-0 and heavily favored to finish the season unscathed.
With one loss, Norco can argue the strength of its schedule. But there is still that one-run, extra-inning defeat.
At first glance, the distance between Norco and No. 5 North Oshkosh (Oshkosh, WI) might seem large, but it is feather thin.
Prospect of the Week: In three recent Howell (Mich.) wins, Notre Dame
pledge
Molly Carney struck out 29 in 17 innings, allowed seven hits
and one earned run.
Game of the Week: Junior Aynslie Furbush
pitched a one-hitter as Winter Springs defeated previous No. 1
Lakewood Ranch for the Florida state 8A championship. Lakewood Ranch
came into the game hitting over .360 and with 122 extra base hits.
Senior Destiny Colgate tripled in two runs for Winter Springs.
Game
to Watch: No. 7 Katy (35-2) takes on No. 9 Keller (35-3-1). It should
be a pitcher's duel where Katy's duo of Chloe Cobb (9-0) and Alyssa
LeBlanc (20-1) square off against Keller senior Dylann Kaderka (25-1).
It's been months since either team lost, but that will change on Friday.
Streaks:
Keystone extended its winning streak to 62 games.
Neshoba Central (Philadelphia, Miss.) has won seven straight state softball
titles.
