Carmine, the starting shortstop for three years prior, volunteered to fill in for the duration. He performed admirably while continuing in his role as pitcher and leading the team in most offensive categories. His dedication and grit were on display for the entire campaign, which helped the team to cement its best winning percentage in 20 years."
