North Dakota High School Basketball - Tioga succumbs to Surrey
December 1, 2023: Tioga, ND 58852 The Surrey Mustangs topped the host Tioga Pirates basketball team by a final score of 68-53 in Friday's non-league game.
In their next game, the Mustangs face the Berthold Bombers (Berthold, ND) in a non-league game, on Thursday, December 7. Surrey will attempt to move on its 1-0 season record. The Bombers enter the game with a 1-0 record after their 53-26 non-league win over Powers Lake/Burke Central (Powers Lake, ND).
With the defeat, Tioga moves to 0-2 on the year. The Pirates travel to Glenburn (Glenburn, ND) to face the Panther in a non-league game on Thursday, December 7. The Panther enter the game with a record of 1-1. Glenburn won 48-41 in their recent non-league game against Harvey (Harvey, ND)
First Quarter
Mustangs got off to a quick start taking a 9-2 lead. Tioga was able to settle things down to keep pace for the rest of the 1st Quarter.
Second Quarter
A turnover filled start to the second from both teams. Tioga does score the first 5 points but it took 3 minutes. The Mustangs finally score putting an end to the 5-0 run.
Thanks to 7 turnovers by the Mustangs and missed Free Throw opportunities by the Pirates the game heads to the locker room tied at 28.
Third Quarter
To the start the half we see 2 lead changes and a tie in the first 3 possessions as the Pirates take their first lead of the game. After the initial surge the game slows down and the Pirates have a 2-point lead 3 minutes into the third quarter.
Tioga sees their largest lead of the night at 4 points but with just over 2 minutes left in the 3rd the Mustangs have a 2-point lead.
The Pirates however are able to push back after the timeout and outscore the Mustangs 5-1 to take a 2-point lead into the 4th Quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Mustangs get off to a quick start scoring 7 unanswered points forcing Tioga to call a timeout just a little over a minute into the 4th. Mustangs score 10 straight points before the Pirates can put an end to the bleeding.
Mustangs continue to dominate the 4th as they are on a 16-2 run forcing Tioga once again to call a timeout midway through the 4th.
Mustangs dominate the 4th quarter thanks to some outstanding 3 point shooting as well as doing a much better job taking care of the basketball.
