Arizona High School Basketball - Deer Valley edges Arcadia
December 28, 2009: Glendale, AZ 85308 The Deer Valley Skyhawks (Glendale, AZ) basketball nipped the visiting Arcadia Titans (Phoenix, AZ), 48-44 in Monday's non-league test.
The Skyhawks (4-4) will now prepare for their test against Willow Canyon (Surprise, AZ). The Wildcats go into the 5A Northwest test with a 0-6 record. In their last test, Willow Canyon was tipped by Gila Bend (Gila Bend, AZ), 73-49, in a non-league test.
The Titans now own a 7-8 record. They take the field next when they travel to Desert Mountain for a non-league test on Monday, December 28. Arcadia will clash with a Wolves squad coming off a 63-53 non-league win over Camelback (Phoenix, AZ). The Wolves record now stands at 9-1.
First Quarter
Arcadia hit three three-pointers en route to a 13 - 10 first quarter edge over Deer Valley. Andrea Gomez scored five for the Lady Titans, while Myles scored six for the Skyhawks.
Second Quarter
The second quarter was tight and saw the lead change hands a few times. Deer Valley had a 22 - 20 lead, but the Lady Titans scored the last three points, good for a 23 - 22 halftime lead. Still, the Skyhawks outscored Arcadia 12 - 10 in the period. Rhiannon Guffey and Megan Gillespie scored five points apiece to account for Arcadia's scoring, while Becker scored five for Deer Valley.
Third Quarter
Deer Valley retook the lead early in the third quarter, but Arcadia assumed control midway through the period, and a three pointer by Megan Gillespie at the buzzer gave the Lady Titans a 17 - 13 advantage in the period, and a 40 - 35 lead at the end of the third quarter. Andrea Gomez scored seven for the Lady Titans, while the Skyhawks got five from Kemnitzer in the period.
Fourth Quarter
Arcadia couldn't hold onto the lead as Deer Valley shut down the Lady Titans' offense, and took a 47 - 40 lead down the stretch. The Lady Titans converted some free throws, and Deer Valley missed some, to make the ending a bit more interesting. Still, the Skyhawks outscored Arcadia 13 - 4 in the period and won the game 48 - 44. Champlin scored five points for Deer Valley in the period and 11 for the game; Becker led Deer Valley for the game with 12 points. Arcadia's Andrea Gomez led all scorers with 14 points, and she also pulled down seven rebounds. Rhiannon Guffey added nine points and nine rebounds for Arcadia, while the Lady Titans' Jenna Longo and Gianna Grumbein had three steals apiece.
