Illinois High School Basketball - Illinois Lutheran topples Grace Christian Academy
January 7, 2019: Crete, IL 60417 In Monday's non-league outing, the Illinois Lutheran Chargers (Crete, IL) basketball squad beat the visiting Grace Christian Academy Crusaders (Kankakee, IL), by a count of 52-44.
The Chargers (3-6) will now prepare for their outing against Donovan (Donovan, IL). The Wildcats go into the River Valley outing with a 1-13 record. In their last outing, Donovan was topped by Iroquois West (Gilman, IL), 42-31, in a non-league outing.
The Crusaders now hold a 1-14 record. They play next when they host Kankakee Trinity Academy for a Illinois Christian outing on Thursday, January 10. Grace Christian Academy will clash with a squad coming off a 82-61 league win over Crete-Monee HomeSchool (Crete, IL). The record now stands at 14-1.
First Quarter
The Chargers jumped out 7-1, led by TJ Vroom's 2 baskets early in the quarter and a three point shot by Eli Dorn. Grace came back to tie the game at 7 and ended up taking a three point lead on a three point shot at the buzzer.
Second Quarter
The Chargers were able to come back in the second quarter as Anthony Kernagis made a huge play in the quarter by blocking a potential layup and grabbing the ball and taking it to the other end for a layup and a foul. Again Grace hit a tough 3 point shot at the end of the quarter to take a two point lead into the half.
Third Quarter
Grace led 30 - 23 at their peak in the third quarter before the Chargers caught fire with their shooting that would last the rest of the game. Kyle Gould hit a couple of three point shots in the quarter and a layup off another hustle play by Anthony to take a 3 point lead into the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Chargers controlled the game in the fourth quarter and got some clutch baskets by Eli Dorn, Kyle Gould and Anthony Kernagis to lead by as many as 10 in the quarter. Grace hit a couple of threes at the end of the quarter but could get no closer than 6 as the Chargers made some free throws at the end to put the ball game away. The Chargers travel to Donovan on Tuesday.
